In the morning of September 9th, a multifunctional meeting room of Taishan Chixi Center School was filled with bursts of laughter. Because an entirely new sort of physical test was underway: a closed container was heating by an alcohol burner with its piston running constantly and driving the mini-electric generator, which was followed by the lighting of a small LED lamp.
Yang Jingrui, a teacher for the nuclear power science popularization caught his students’ eyes immediately through this elaborate test prepared! Many students raised their hands to ask: how is the lamp lighted? Why does the piston keep running?
This was a scene happened in the first class of nuclear power science popularization.
In order to acquaint students with more knowledge of nuclear power plant operation, Yang Jingrui introduced the whole process of power generation integrated with physical test demonstrating power generation principle.
Suddenly Mr. Yang raised a common issue of concern “We know that nuclear fuel adopted in nuclear power plant has radiation, so is it safe? Are you scared?” Apparently, one question grew into thousands. Students were immersed in discussion.
Mr. Yang solved the puzzle in simple language. Firstly, students were asked to read “the world map of nuclear power” in Nuclear, You and Me to know the global status of safe nuclear energy utilization. In addition, staff working in TSNP with comfort served as a good example to prove the safety. Finally, students read the “Four physical shields for defense in depth of TSNP” and “Five-level of protection for defense in depth of TSNP” in Nuclear, You and Me to learn that high-tech made TSNP safer.
“The first class” was one of the nuclear power scientific popularization activities for TSNP “Good Neighbors” project. This year, school teacher was invited to deliver “the first class”. Yang Jingrui, not only a physical teacher in Chixi Center School but also a nuclear power science popularization lecturer trained and examined by TSNP. This activity lifted the curtain on the school-based course “Nuclear, You and Me” for Junior 2 students in Chixi Town.
