On July 7th, TNPJVC invited the students who participated in the environmental protection cartoon competition and their parents to pay a visit with the theme of “Visit nuclear power plant - build a clean and beautiful world”. This activity was also the final one of a series of activities for 2022 Environment Day jointly held by TNPJVC and the South China Regional Office of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspection of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the PRC.

    “The double-layer containment is amazing!”
The science popularization exhibition hall is the first stop of the “Visit to Nuclear Power Plant”. In the hall, visitors gained an insight into the development of nuclear power industry in China, the construction process of TSNP, the principle of nuclear power generation, as well as the characteristics of EPR technology and its safety performance. Standing in front of the reactor model, students and parents learnt that the whole reactor was covered in the two-layer reinforced concrete containment with a thickness of 1.8m and 1.3m respectively. They praised “It’s amazing!”

“You are really more concerned about the surrounding environment than we are!”
In the second stop, the students and their parents came to the Environmental Laboratory of TNPJVC and saw various environmental analysis instruments. The engineers of the lab said that they use these instruments to analyze samples collected from the surrounding of the plant, including the air, water, soil, sediment, terrestrial and aquatic plants and animals. The radiation level of the environment surrounding the plant can be analyzed by these pieces of precise equipment.

The students’ eyes always gleamed with curiosity. “It turns out that TNPJVC is equipped with so many large instruments for environmental monitoring. You are really more concerned about the surrounding environment than we are!” The children were full of wonder in their chatting. “In addition to regular collection and analysis of surrounding environmental samples, the plant also conducts real-time monitoring of the surrounding environment!” said the laboratory engineer. After that, he led the crowd to the central station of radiation monitoring system.

“Radiation level of the surrounding environment has always been the same as the background level before the construction of power plant.”
In the visit to the central station of radiation monitoring system, the children and their parents exclaimed with admiration. They saw the data sent back from the radiation monitoring station and said “it turns out the plant has full knowledge of the ambient wind speed, wind direction, dose rate and others.” The plant engineer also told them that in accordance with the monitoring data displayed, the radiation level of the environment surrounding the plant has always been the same as the background level before the construction of plant.

The environment day activities on June 5th with the theme of “environmental protection-developing clean energy to build a beautiful green world” ended with success. Thanks to the activities from “environmental protection in school”, “cartoon exhibition” to “visit to the nuclear power plant”, the local community has better understanding of the nuclear power as a clean and safe energy.
