On November 11th, Taishan City’s 6th Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition took place at Xinning Primary School in Taishan City, which was co-organized by Taishan Association for Science and Technology, Taishan Education Bureau, Taishan Bureau of Science, Industry and Commerce, Taishan Committee of the Communist Youth League and Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. With the theme of “Innovation, Experience, Joy and Growth”, the competition was divided into three sections: Competition on Youth Sci-tech Innovation Achievements, Competition on Educator’s Professional Competency &Sci-tech Innovation Achievements and Nuclear-power-themed Paintings &Digital Poster.
More than 40 primary and secondary schools, including Taishan Li Xingqu Memorial School and Taishan Wenhai Secondary School, participated in the competition. This year's nuclear-power-themed project received a total of 321 paintings and 20 digital posters, covering nuclear safety culture, nuclear power knowledge, nuclear power landscape and more. Students of all ages in Taishan city participated, and this competition received and displayed the largest number of works in its history. Using the popularization materials provided earlier by TNPJVC, students showed their imaginative ideas and expressed their love for TSNP in their paintings and words.
(Zhang Jinglan from Taishan Li Xingqu Memorial School won first prize in the nuclear-power-themed paintings.)
The panel of judges ultimately selected 40 first-prize winners, 60 second-prize winners and 100 third-prize winners for the nuclear power-themed paintings. For the nuclear-power-themed digital posters, 5 first-prize, 5 second-prize and 5 third-prize winners were chosen. That afternoon, 100 nuclear-power-themed paintings and 15 nuclear-power-themed digital posters were exhibited at Xinning Primary School. Over a thousand students and their parents attended the exhibition and exchanged ideas, further sparking the curiosity, imagination, and desire for exploration in science among students.
By getting students participated in such activity, TSNP encouraged the students to actively learn about nuclear power and enhanced their scientific understanding of clean energy, which avoided the weaknesses of self-promotion in nuclear power popularization, making students more willing to accept and participate. Moreover, parents and teachers were full of enthusiasm, expanding the reach of nuclear power popularization. Many parents said that by taking part in nuclear-power-themed paintings, both they and their children gained a deeper understanding of the local nuclear power plant. They hoped that such activity, which helps foster children’s innovative thinking and practical skills, can be organized more frequently in the future.
TNPJVC’s active involvement in Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition isn’t just about popularizing nuclear power. It’s also a tangible way to support Taishan City in becoming a National Innovative County (City) and contribute to local science and technology innovation and education, ultimately boosting the scientific literacy of the entire population.
